Mila had her first follow up appointment with Dr. Freedman on Wednesday of this week. The morning after the last surgery we had a scare. The eye that had just been operated on (her right) looked great and the doctor was pleased. But, when the good doctor was examining the eye that had had surgery the week before we could see her get worried. She is not a good poker player. She was unhappy about the way that Mila's cornea looked (it had become cloudy, unlike a normal crystal clear eye looks). When she checked the pressures she realized that they had jumped from a 10 the night before (normal) to a 26 that morning (possible early signs of glaucoma).
Of course, for two parents wanting so badly to breathe just one sigh of relief, this was not the news that we needed to hear. The drive home was hard, but we were sent with an adjustment in the eye drop routine and an added drop for the pressure to see if we could regulate the situation that way. The explanation was that this could have been a reaction to the steroid drops that are necessary due to surgery. So the dosages were lowered and a drop for pressure was added.
Needless to say we had a tough week full of hope and anxiety. We are happy to report that as of this Wednesday her pressures have cleared up and things look as good as they could at this point!
Mila is wearing her glasses as much as she can, every moment that her eyes are open (which is still not the majority of the day). She likes to push them off of of her nose and to be honest that is not very hard. Babies do have small noses. One bright point is that the act of putting on her glasses has made me examine and admire her nose even more. Every part of a baby is tiny, and it is a miracle that it can hold shape and form while it grows.
We will upload pictures of Mila in glasses soon so that everyone can see her. We have another follow up appointment next week and then things should stretch out a bit with visits once a month.
Thank you all for caring enough to read this, and thank you so much for your support. We are so very appreciative to have a community like this surrounding us at this time in our lives.
We'll talk soon,
T,P & M
